The Intersection of Fashion and Watches: Collaborations Between High-End Brands and Watchmakers
Posted by AIS Watches on Jun 23rd 2023
As the art of watchmaking continues to evolve, brands are exploring new ways to express their creativity. One of these ways is through collaborations with other brands and designers. The idea behind collaborations is that a watchmaker can bring its unique skill set in crafting timepieces while another brand brings its own unique aesthetics and style in designing clothing or accessories. There's still a lot we don't know about how these collaborations work because most brands won't talk about them—but here are five high-end fashion houses who have worked with watchmakers on limited edition watches:
Will All Luxury Watch Brands Follow Suit?
The luxury watch market is growing, and it's changing. There are many new brands coming into the market, and as a result, competition is becoming fierce. The industry has become more globalized, fragmented (with a greater diversity of products), and diverse in its offerings over the last few years. Will all luxury brands follow suit?
In some ways it makes sense: partnerships between high-end fashion brands and watchmakers have been successful for both parties in recent years--and they continue to be so today. But there may also be downsides for these collaborations as well; if too many companies enter into them at once, they could dilute each other's value proposition by making their product lines seem homogeneous instead of unique when compared side by side with each other.
Patek Philippe X Tiffany & Co.
Patek Philippe is a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer founded in 1839 in Geneva, Switzerland. The company produces around 3000 watches per year and is known for its complicated mechanical watches and its prestigious clientele.
Tiffany & Co., founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, Jr., opened its doors on October 28th 1837 as the "Tiffany & Young Store" at 21 Union Square (New York City). Today it operates over 600 stores worldwide including those located in Japan and China.
Hublot X Berluti
Hublot X Berluti is a limited edition timepiece created in collaboration with the French luxury menswear brand. The watch is inspired by the brand's heritage and its founder, who was known for his signature blue suit. It features a blue dial with a white gold case, as well as an automatic movement that can be seen through the sapphire crystal glass back panel of this timepiece.
The Hublot X Berluti watch comes with three different straps: black calfskin leather strap with white stitching; brown alligator skin strap; or brown suede strap (all designed by Berluti).
Audemars Piguet X Ralph & Russo
Audemars Piguet and Ralph & Russo are collaborating on a limited edition watch. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver is inspired by the brand's iconic diving watch, but features an 18k rose gold case with a black rubber strap. The case back features both brands' logos: Audemars Piguet's crown logo and Ralph & Russo's intertwined "R"s.
The collaboration is limited to 100 pieces worldwide and will retail for $38,800 USD when it launches this fall at select retailers including Barney's New York in Beverly Hills and Chicago; Bergdorf Goodman; Colette in Paris; Maxfield LA; David Webb at Saks Fifth Avenue Dubai Mall; Tourneau Dubai Mall (opening soon); L'Atelier Maison in Macau.
Tutima X Esquivel Compass
Tutima is a Swiss watch brand that was established in 1912 and has been producing timepieces for over 100 years. Esquivel Compass is a Spanish watch brand, which began in 2015 and produces luxury watches with mechanical movements and unique designs. Together, these two brands have collaborated to create a unique timepiece that features both their individual styles: the Tutima X Esquivel Compass watch includes a compass along with rotating bezels on both sides of its face.
The question is whether all watch brands will follow suit and begin collaborating with other brands.
The answer is yes, all watch brands will follow suit. This trend is already happening as we speak. For example, Breitling has teamed up with high-end fashion brand Louis Vuitton to create a unique collection of watches inspired by the famous artistic director Marc Jacobs' designs for LV's Spring/Summer 2018 runway show in Paris last year. In addition to collaborating with other brands, watchmakers are also partnering up with artisanal craftsmen who specialize in creating unique pieces that highlight their respective brand's heritage and values while adding value to them through handcrafted elements such as engravings or precious materials used during manufacturing processes (e.g., gold). Finally, some watchmakers have even begun working directly with their own retail partners so that they can expand their reach beyond traditional brick-and-mortar stores into online channels such as Amazon Prime Day sales events where consumers can purchase products at discounted prices without having access only through physical stores like Macy's or Bloomingdales which often require certain minimum purchase amounts before shipping charges kick in.
The question is whether all watch brands will follow suit and begin collaborating with other brands. We think they will, especially if it means reaching new customers who may not be interested in purchasing a watch from their own brand. The luxury industry is changing, and this trend towards collaboration shows that fashion and watches are becoming more intertwined than ever before.
